Father Poem – By Noel Piper

This poem was written by Pastor John Pipers wife, which she wrote about her Dad. My hearts desire is that my Daughter will say this about the Lord Jesus and me. My prayer is that Oasis Church will produce Dad’s to this standard. It is a high calling men, with huge responsibility, but we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength (Philippians 4:13).

No tree however deep the roots,
However high and green the shoots,
However strong the trunk has stood,
Or firm the fibers of the wood,
No tree was ever meant to be
A never-ending shade for me
Or you. Save one: where Jesus died
With bleeding branches spread as wide
And far as faith for sinful men.

But there was shade, especially when
The tree was old: the leaves were thick
With life, and though the root was sick,
The bark deep-creased with age, the limbs
Were laden down with love, and hymns
Were heard beneath when wind bestirred
The bowing branches with the Word
Of heaven. O there were years of shade!

And more: there was the fruit he made,
Or better, bore, when all the ground
Seemed dry, we turned again and found
The branches heavy with some rare
Well-watered food and sweet called Care.

There must have been a river there
Beneath the arid earth somewhere
Deep-flowing up around the tips
Of dying roots, and giving sips
Of everlasting life for him
To share with us while every limb
Gave up its own. O, there was fruit!
Life-giving from the dying root.

And more. Much more. There was the wood
And it was strong. It had withstood
A thousand storms, and everyone
More firm. And now for every son,
Grandchild and every daughter here
He lies a fallen tree and dear,
And leaves in you the solid wood
And bids you stand where he has stood
Beside the river of the Word,
And that you keep what you have heard,
And sing with him in one accord:
“My fruitful house will serve the Lord.”

The Lord is Our Righteousness: Poem by Robert Murry McCheyne

Jehovah Tsidkenu
“The Lord Our Righteousness”

The watchword of the Reformers—

I once was a stranger to grace and to God,
I knew not my danger, and felt not my load;
Though friends spoke in rapture of Christ on the tree,
Jehovah Tsidkenu was nothing to me.

I oft read with pleasure, to soothe or engage,
Isaiah’s wild measure and John’s simple page;
But e’en when they pictured the blood-sprinkled tree
Jehovah Tsidkenu seemed nothing to me.

Like tears from the daughters of Zion that roll,
I wept when the waters went over His soul;
Yet thought not that my sins had nailed to the tree
Jehovah Tsidkenu—’twas nothing to me.

When free grace awoke me, by light from on high,
Then legal fears shook me, I trembled to die;
No refuge, no safety in self could I see—
Jehovah Tsidkenu my Savior must be.

My terrors all vanished before the sweet name;
My guilty fears banished, with boldness I came
To drink at the fountain, life-giving and free—
Jehovah Tsidkenu is all things to me.

Jehovah Tsidkenu! my treasure and boast,
Jehovah Tsidkenu! I ne’er can be lost;
In thee I shall conquer by flood and by field—
My cable, my anchor, my breastplate and shield!

Even treading the valley, the shadow of death,
This “watchword” shall rally my faltering breath;
For while from life’s fever my God sets me free,
Jehovah Tsidkenu my death-song shall be.

And All of God’s People said – ‘AMEN!’

Sang this song today, as I visited Gendros Baptist Church, haven't sang it for a long while.
It was the second Christian song that I ever sang after I came to Christ when I was 18.
It will always have a key place in my life as it declares to the Lord my deepest feelings.
Sometimes words can't express what you think and feel, but this song does that for me.
Its an older-ish song (80's!) which is slower than our contemporary music, but it is awesome.

I could sing this song, meaninging EVERY Word when I was 18 and can still sing it today, 14 years
on and still meaning EVERY Word. I also know that in a 1000 years time, when i'm with the Lord
Jesus, I will sing it, still meaning EVERY Word.

So here you have 'As the deer pants for the water', taken from Psalm 42:1.

As the deer pants for the water So my soul longs after You
You alone are my heart's desire And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire And I long to worship You

I want You more than gold or silver Only You can satisfy
You alone are the real joy-giver And the apple of my eye

You're my Friend and You are my Brother Even though You are a King
I love You more than any other So much more than anything

C. S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia, on Jill’s thirst and search for water:

The birds had ceased singing and there was perfect silence except for one small, persistent sound, which seemed to come from a good distance away. She listened carefully, and felt almost sure it was the sound of running water.

Jill got up and looked round her very carefully. There was no sign of the lion; but there were so many trees about that it might easily be quite close without her seeing it. . . . But her thirst was very bad now, and she plucked up her courage to go and look for that running water. . . .

The wood was so still that it was not difficult to decide where the sound was coming from. It grew clearer every moment and, sooner than she expected, she came to an open glade and saw the stream, bright as glass, running across the turf a stone’s throw away from her. But although the sight of water made her feel ten times thirstier than before, she didn’t rush forward to drink. She stood as still as if she had been turned to stone, with her mouth wide open. And she had a very good reason: Just on this side of the stream lay the Lion. . . .

How long this lasted, she could not be sure; it seemed like hours. And the thirst became so bad that she almost felt she would not mind being eaten by the lion if only she could be sure of getting a mouthful of water first.

“If you’re thirsty, you may drink.” . . .

For a second she stared here and there, wondering who had spoken. Then the voice said again,

“If you are thirsty, come and drink.” . . .

It was deeper, wilder, and stronger; a sort of heavy, golden voice. . . .

“Are you thirsty?” said the Lion.

“I’m dying of thirst,” said Jill.

“Then drink,” said the Lion.

“May I — could I — would you mind going away while I do?” said Jill.

The Lion answered this only by a look and a very low growl. . . . The delicious rippling noise of the stream was driving her nearly frantic. . . .

“Do you eat girls?” she asked fearfully.

“I have swallowed up girls and boys, women and men, kings and emperors, cities and realms,” said the Lion. It didn’t say this as if it were boasting, nor as if it were sorry, nor as if it were angry. It just said it.

“I daren’t come and drink,” said Jill.

“Then you will die of thirst,” said the Lion.

“Oh dear!” said Jill, coming another step nearer. “I suppose I must go and look for another stream then.”

“There is no other stream,” said the Lion

I came across this John Piper video which challenged me! So take a look if you got a minute! It ties in membership and some responsibilities for leaders and members.

Been thinking a lot lately about our ‘Family Worship’ together. I’m not talking here of my own devotion to the Lord everyday or our commitment to public Worship with Oasis church on a Saturday, but as a family, how I lead in ‘Family Worship’ on a regular basis during the week. Before Amelia came along Bec & me would sit down regularly to read scripture and pray. We would not have a set time as we were very flexible just being the 2 of us. But as we have Amelia, time needs to be more disciplined and I want to set a pattern now, even though she is only 9 weeks old, which will suit us as a family when it comes to ‘Family Worship’. I want us as a family to be reading scripture, praying, praising (singing), and serving together. We have decided that the best time for this is after our evening meal when we can settle down together and focus on the Lord. Not saying that it will be every evening, but it will be a regular part of our week.

Below are some video clips from John Piper which have been helpful to me in thinking ‘Family Worship’ through.
